The enemy is capitalism

The new face of the democratic resistance

John Edwards has a campaign script and it’s apparently been written some time ago… by Karl Marx.

MENLO PARK, Calif. — Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards on Thursday called for a federal investigation into possible antitrust violations by the oil industry and criticized oil companies for raising gas prices.

There’s absolutely no justification for the gas companies to be as profitable as they are and have the taxpayers subsidizing the industry,” Edwards said. ~washingtonpost.com

Let’s see: profits bad, setting the price of your product according to market levels, definately bad.

High gas prices are bad because of what now?

Wendy Li, the co-owner of a family run sheet metal manufacturing company in San Jose, joined Edwards during the appearance to tell him how soaring gas prices have put financial pressure on the business and her family.

“It’s holding us hostage,” said Li, an Edwards campaign volunteer. “And you can’t just say ‘drive less.’” ~washingtonpost.com

Genius trial lawyer, John Edwards, has the solution. To lower gas prices we must have an excess profits tax. Ooooohhh. Aaaaaahhhh.

Oil companies are making huge profits by any possible measurement and in some states their clean air laws are not being enforced they way they were meant to be,” Edwards said. “As a result, oil companies are getting a free ride and polluting the environment in the process.”

If elected, Edwards also promised to take aim at the billions of dollars in added profits oil companies have reported as gas prices moved toward $4 a gallon in the Bay Area.

“I’m very open to the possibility of an excess profits tax,” Edwards said. ~sfgate.com

Raising taxes good.

But I’m confused. Isn’t tax basically pure profit for the government? And isn’t this basically Edwards saying he is raising government prices? If Edwards were the CEO of Shell Oil or Exxon he would be castigating himself for making billions of dollars on higher government prices (taxes).

Just a thought.

Secondly, wouldn’t taxing oil companies in such a punitive manner just raise the price of gasoline further by raising the cost of business for the very entities we are dependent on to produce our gasoline? It’s not as though the government produces anything for it’s share of the profits.

It’s precisely this kind of ‘innovative thinking’, not to mention economic ignorance, circa the 19th century, that has doomed the Democratic party in the past.

“For America to be strong, we have to be the most innovative country in the world,” he said.   ~sfgate.com

As has been said by someone far wiser than me – well, actually it was some guy who writes text to go on posters that college students put up on their walls – but OK – someone far wiser than me …

“In every organization there is someone who understands what is going on and can fix the problems facing them. This person must be found – and shot!”

Seems to me you’re making too much sense these days, my friend. Been nice knowing you …
